American walnut is one of the most well-known hardwood species. This beautiful, classic wood has soft, muted tones that range from greyish-brown to chocolate brown and sometimes even reddish-brown. The sapwood (the outer part of the trunk) is often lighter in color. The growth rings in the wood are easily visible thanks to their color contrast. They create a striking pattern that resembles a quilted blanket or stripes. There are many variations in this pattern, as the wood contains more or less prominent, almost black streaks.
